Two Student Assistants (w/m/d) (60 hours per month)

The project:
Preparation of an English-language version of the 16-volume document collection Die Verfolgung und Ermordung der europäischen Juden durch das nationalsozialistische Deutschland, 1933-1945 (VEJ). The English version, entitled The Persecution and Murder of the European Jews by Nazi Germany, 1933–1945 (PMJ), is updated and adapted for an English-language audience. Seven volumes have already appeared in English and currently four further volumes are in different stages of preparation. The project partners are the Leibniz Institute for Contemporary History, the University of Freiburg, and the German Federal Archives, in cooperation with the International Institute for Holocaust Research at Yad Vashem. The project is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

The project employs four student assistants at any one time, working as a team and cooperating closely with the researchers/translation editors and the project lead.

Tasks:
- Research tasks in preparing the volumes, including researching biographical information, updating footnotes for an English-language readership, bibliographical searching, preparing a bibliography and creating other additional materials for each volume
- Using an XML-based editing system in a database (Oxygen XML-editor, TCToolbox)
- Producing the full thematic index for each volume
- Support for marketing activities including creating content for social media

Essential requirements:
- Current registration as an MA or BA student in Modern History, Jewish Studies, or a related subject
- Knowledge of and interest in the history of the Holocaust, the Second World War and Jewish history in Europe
- Fluency in written and spoken English
- Fluency in written and spoken German
- Enthusiasm for working as part of a team
- Attention to detail
- Experience of using XML-based editing systems is welcome
- Work/internship experience in translation/publishing is welcome

Start date: 1 July 2024 or by negotiation at a later date
Place of employment: Berlin
Duration of contract: initially until 30 April 2025, with possibility of extension thereafter.
Remuneration according to regulations set by the Leibniz Institute for Contemporary History.
